Podcast Tweaks

Posted on November 1, 2022November 1, 2022 by Mark Stevens

This is a blog about The Rocky Mountain Writer podcast. Yeah, your podcast.

I’m looking to put together podcast episodes based on a theme—with a couple or three total guests—kind of like a good panel at Colorado Gold. There are 1. 5 zillion ways to approach this, and I’m open to your input. The episodes don’t have to be a platform for so-called “experts” who know the answers. I mean, that’s fine too. But they could also be a discussion about issues, challenges, frustrations, problem-solving.

  • The struggle to find an agent.
  • The struggles of working with an agent once you’ve got one.
  • The effort to find a publisher—large or small.
  • The challenge of getting into a regular writing groove.
  • Marketing tips, tricks, and scams to avoid.
  • How to turn your hobby into a full-time career—what’s the best way to go?
  • Defining yourself as a writer. Better to stick with genre? Or try new things?
  • How to mix writing short stories & full-length fiction.
  • The “do’s” and “don’ts” of writing diverse characters.
  • The pros and cons of mashing genres.
  • Social media yes or no and how much?

Of course, we could also do episodes with two or three guests chatting about the topics we all love to think about:

  • Character development.
  • Improving atmosphere and sense of place.
  • Sharpening dialogue.
  • Escalating tension.
  • Improving your written voice.
  • Third person or first?
  • Editing, self-editing, and should I pay for a professional?

Of course the podcast is always here/available to serve as an opportunity to chat about your latest book or news of any kind.

These days, recording a podcast is as easy as jumping on a Zoom call, so let me know. Send questions, ideas, suggestions of any kind to podcast@rmfw.org. (I’m also open to having a co-host on the podcast; training available.)

Let me know.

I’ve signed and worked with several agents NY, Hollywood, and those outside NY. My experiences with each have been wildly different– from just what you’d dream of to nightmarish. The most disheartening and shocking experiences were with top tier agents, well known names. It would be fun to join your podcast to talk about my variety of experiences. In some cases cautionary tales.

Looks like a stellar list! I can’t wait to enjoy more content-rich podcasts. You do such an amazing job getting great info out of your guests.

Would love to hear it! I always like hearing your guests answers to the questions about their writing processes; it would be fun to have a panel just on that. My opinion is that everyone needs to find their own process, but the more we hear of others’ processes, the more options we know of to try for ourselves.

ps. if you want a hand making a google form with these topics for people to sign up, just reach out!

Dani — I would absolutely welcome the help with creating a sign-up form. And I love the idea of a panel on the process itself!!
