2024 Education Event: The One-Day MFA with Angie Hodapp

Date: June 22, 2024
Time: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
Location: Hyatt Regency Aurora-Denver Conference Center, 13200 E. 14th Place, Aurora, CO
Education Event | Full Day Program

Have you missed the annual education events? We held these events every year for decades and now we’re back.

Angie Hodapp, Nelson Literary Agency will present: The One-Day MFA

Does artful prose belong solely in the realm of literary fiction? Do writers of genre fiction only need to concern themselves with matters of plot and pacing? No! This workshop is all about what genre writers can learn from their literary cousins. Come prepared to write! We’ll explore the differences between commercial, upmarket, and literary writing and learn various poetic and literary devices you can immediately put to work in your prose, no matter your genre. From simple sentences to complex scenes, how can description be used to make meaning? How can voice be used to support theme? And most importantly, how can you develop a personal writing style that leaves a lasting impression on your readers?

Angie Hodapp is the Director of Literary Development at Nelson Literary Agency. She holds a BA in English and secondary education from the University of Northern Colorado and an MA in English and communication development from Colorado State University. A graduate of the Publishing Institute at the University of Denver, she has worked in professional writing, editing, and education for more than twenty years. A frequent presenter at writing conferences and events, and the author of Query Craft and Do You Need a Literary Agent, she loves helping writers improve their craft and learn about the ever-changing world of publishing.

One-on-One Ten Minutes Meetings with Chelsey Emmelhaniz

Chelsey Emmelhainz joined Copps Literary Services in 2021 after a decade as an editor of upmarket fiction and nonfiction. Upon graduating from the Denver Publishing Institute, she got her start at HarperCollins with William Morrow and Avon Books. She was most recently a senior editor at Crooked Lane Books. As an editor, Chelsey worked on projects that cross the literary landscape: from Amish romance to upmarket thrillers and everything in between. An editorial agent, she is building a highly selective list, focused mainly on adult fiction (mystery, horror, suspense, and contemporary fiction) and nonfiction (history, political science, pop science, and narrative).

Chelsey will meet one-on-one, in ten minutes slots, to:

  • Critique the first two pages of your work in progress; or
  • Critique your one-page query letter; or
  • Critique your one-page synopsis; or
  • Discuss the industry and get their opinion on a topic of your choosing.
  • Chelsey is not taking pitches.
  • We have limited slots. Register early for an appointment!
  • Pages for critique must be sent to Vicki Law, education@rmfw.org by May 31, 2024.

More Information:

  • From 3:30 – 4:00pm Angie and Chelsey will answer your questions about the industry.
