As an established author and the CEO of a medium-sized publishing house, I’m often asked what my advice is to a new author. My answer is always, “Get involved with a writing organization.”
There are many facets to being part of a writing organization, and membership has a lot of perks.
The Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers offers memberships for only $59 per year. It’s an affordable business expense when you’re ready to claim that title of author, write that next great novel, and get it published. RMFW is based in Denver, Colorado, but our membership reach is worldwide.
If you’re already a member of RMFW, you are probably familiar with our Colorado Gold Conference, one of the largest in the area. Members receive a discounted price for the packed event that includes workshops on craft, submitting to agents and publishers, marketing, publishing options, and so much more. It offers the opportunity to network with like-minded individuals and meet and learn from industry experts, such as agents, editors, publishers, etc. Conferences like Colorado Gold are imperative to an author’s success.
Learning from others in the industry and seeing their journeys is priceless. No one author’s path to publication is the same, and hearing about the steps each author has taken is worth the price of membership.
In addition to the conference, RMFW offers workshops and classes in the Denver Metro area and Grand Junction for those living on the western slope. RMFW U, our online learning format, will be returning soon so that our members far and wide can access our workshops as well.
But that’s not all that your membership offers you.
The Professional Author Alliance (PAA) supports our professional authors with ongoing education to enhance their writing careers, opportunities to participate in selling events, and networking events such as monthly coffee klatches.
In addition to our ongoing support and education classes, RMFW has secured discounts on resources that authors at all levels can use. These benefits include a discount at Bowker for their multitude of services, Juniper Ink Photography, Alex Stallsworth Cover Art – Character Sheets & Illustrations, Jenna MacFarlane – Cover Art, Daniel Willis – Editing Services, and Writers Block Box subscriptions. This list is constantly expanding.
Above all the education, professional groups, and discounts, RMFW offers a safe place to explore your author journey and find support. The networking that happens at our events or online communities is priceless; when I direct new authors to join an organization, it’s the networking I want them to get excited about. There’s nothing better than to grow, learn, and be supported by your peers.
I came to RMFW already established in my career. I found a home here and have been teaching at events and conferences for years, helping other authors kick-start their careers. I find great joy in the people and education that are provided to me as I continue to enhance my career.
Are you looking for a home to advance your writing career? Contact a board member or join us for our Colorado Gold Conference in September. You’ll quickly see that membership has its benefits.
