December Self-banters, Quips and Riddles

Posted on December 15, 2023February 1, 2024 by Rainey Hall

“Sending Christmas cards is a good way to let your friends and family know that you think they’re worth the price of a stamp.” Melanie White*

December 16

Jane Austen’s Birthday (Mr. Darcy!)

National Chocolate Covered Anything Day

*

My favorite gift to myself this year: the final payment for a loan. The envelope lost, you guessed it, by the little local post office. Sigh.

*

December 17

National Maple Syrup Day (Isn’t syrup one of the basic food groups for elves?)

Wright Brothers Day (Had to share this, cuz I’m a historical, (educational/mystery/thriller/root for the underdog), fiction fan.

*

There I was on Amazon seeking fairy lights, both warm white and cold white, and I couldn’t help myself. Honest. Okay, so I justified more book purchases because I’ve been putting in a few extra hours at work this month. That and, paperbacks, easily bend, fit my hands better, and calling a book my own equals my marking-up ability. Using pencil OR pen. I only highlight the important parts such as, names, dates, locations, outstanding setting and character descriptions, fun words I don’t often read, and plot twists.

Which leads me to my latest confession: Last year, I ordered a book for a friend of mine, and before I knew it, I’d lost all control. Marked up quite a few sections. I sent a new one to her for St. Patrick’s Day.

December 18

Underdog Day (Every story needs at least one.)

*

How did the snowman become a secret agent before the new year?

He got a license to chill!

*

This month I’m named, (the future) President of the Dumont Cemetery Preservation Board. Thus far, I’m the only member on the board, but still… On Saturday morning, December 19th, I’m honored joining other local history “knowledgeables” for, National Wreaths Across America Day.

*

December 21

Celebrate Short Fiction Day!

*

“You can tell a lot about a person by the way they handle three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights.” Maya Angelou

*

Wisdom comes with winters – Oscar Wilde

*

December 24

National Chocolate Day

*

December 26 National Thank You Note Day (Especially within your family.)

*

What band will you never catch the Grinch listening to in December? The Who!

*

December 29

National Hero Day (No story without ‘em!)

*

What did the man say to his phone on New Year’s Eve?

My New Year’s revolution is to not use autocorrect in 2024.

The first poem I wrote, (cowboy poetry), was somewhere around age nine, and had something to do with a pig’s snout. My first self-published work was a fictional short story titled, The Frozen Moose. I was living in the far reaches of humanity where the weather frequented 0, volunteering for Welcome Home Warrior, now defunct, and helping at retreats for active duty and veteran families. That’s when a friend of mine committed suicide. Out of those experiences came the above story. I love researching, learning, and writing Women’s/Historical Fiction. Currently, I contribute a blog every month to RMFW.org. I enjoy any mammal, walking uphill, ATVing, learning, reading, taking naps, gardening, and church service.
