This year, RMFW is excited to offer something new at the Colorado Gold conference: a half day of programming designed specifically for our young writers.
The Teen Writers Program will take place Sunday, September 9th from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Registration is for teens aged 13 to 18, and requires a $50 fee and signed parental consent form. Lunch is provided.
The Teen Writers Program will take place at the same location as the rest of the conference, the Renaissance Hotel in Denver, and will include the following teen-only workshops:
7:30-8:00 a.m. Check-In, Welcome, & Swag Bag
8:00-8:50 a.m. Building Better Beginnings: Making Your First Sentences Count
Learn how to engage readers right away, whether it’s at the beginning of the book or the beginning of a chapter. Author Todd Fahnestock teaches participants how to quickly and efficiently weave three key story elements together to heighten tension and interest. Build your setting by illustrating your character solving the plot…all in one sentence. You can (and should) hit the ground running with powerful first sentences.
Presenter: Todd Fahnestock
9:00-9:50 a.m. Bring Your Ideas to Life: Story Boards and Other Visual Strategies
Author Sue Duff helps you create something tangible from all the ideas floating around in your head. Learn how to use a variety of resources to create storyboards, make use of your diary entries, your notebook sketches, or imaginative ideas, and bring your stories to life. Butcher paper, journals and other materials will be supplied, or bring your own pictures, sketches, notebooks, etc. to use during this hands-on workshop.
Presenter: Sue Duff
10:00-11:50 a.m. How to Produce a Graphic Novel
Bring your imagination to this workshop. Led by three comic book authors and one artist, participants will collaborate on creating a short graphic novel. Along the way, learn the basics of both the writing and artistic processes. Oh, and be one of the first 25 to arrive to receive a free comic book!
Panelists: Mario Acevedo, Warren Hammond, Aaron Lovett, Joshua Viola
12:00-1:00 p.m. Lunch with an Author
Dine with published authors and aspiring writers who are happy to answer questions and support your writing journey.
