Santa’s gift to me—and to you!

Posted on December 28, 2020December 28, 2020 by Janet Lane

A friend sent me this photo, and I laughed out loud.

Then a sensation overcame me. You know the feeling, a little tingling in your psyche as the miracle of creativity takes hold, transporting you to a place of bliss and visions and words.

A backstory of Santa’s predicament came to mind in gentle bursts of ideas.

I finished, refreshed and quietly gleeful.

Here’s what came from my keyboard. It pleased me deeply. Nope, it won’t win any prizes, but it makes me smile.

Santa Got All Tied Up in a Windmill

It started as usual, a festive red sleigh,
Rudolph in front making splendid headway.
Fast in the sky tinged pink in the gloaming,
They flew o’er rooftops in northern Wyoming.
Then something spun in the darkening skies!
Santa squinted and grunted in startled surprise.
Blades loomed in the sky, like a toy whirligig,
But ever so tall and ever so big!
“Stop Comet and Cupid and Donder and Blitzen!”
But the reindeer were laughing and chose not to listen.
The reins got so tangled they couldn’t escape,
And they twirled ’round and ’round like a holiday drape.
Dangling like socks they swung in the blizzard,
And Santa cried out, “Quick! bring me my scissors!”
To this day the remnants are seen at the site,
A jumble of jingle bells, fur, red and white.
With luck and relief though, they finished their flight,
“Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!”

The humorous drawing fired my imagination, and I entered that otherworldly place of creativity, the words dancing in rhythm as they entered the page.

My conclusion? This year, Santa Claus brought me a gift!

It’s my gift. It’s your gift, too. I’m happy for you, and happy for me, that we share the joy of writing.

Happy New Year! I wish you many episodes of inspiration in the coming months—many fine works of art that bring you joy.
