“It’s something we can’t see or touch but we feel it. It’s the death knell to our dreams and desires. It’s negative and designed to get in the way of any invention, or creation.” https://livepurposefullynow.com/how-to-outsmart-procrastination/
My procrastination, I think, comes from comparing myself to other writers. Tsk, tsk, tsk. I’m consciously working on that. What about you? Do you procrastinate?
Add common distractions I’m prone to such as, work, stressing about money in this seemingly endless hyperinflation, baseball, hummingbirds, spring flowers, and…. Time can rush by like a river after a mountain thunder storm.
“Most of the time, people mistake being distracted for procrastination.” https://livepurposefullynow.com/4-things-that-distract-you-and-how-to-crush-them-forever/
Did I mention baseball being a distraction of mine?
May 20, 2022: Yankees vs the White Sox. Also, and this is important, the 20th is the Andy Pettitte Bobblehead night.
Alas, I digress.
Each Sunday is my weekly planning day.
First, I ask myself, Am I living purposefully?
Second, What are my goals this week?
Third, I schedule time during the week, often daily, for each of the following: writing, researching, sporting events, (plus travel time, if required), of course my day job, reading, walks/stretching, church and gospel study, social media, personal appointments, family and friend visits, napping, two movies, one Alfred Hitchcock show, and one humorous television show such as, Modern Family, meditation/prayer, and a little time to do nothing at all.
Fourth, I remind myself of the basics of writing.
- Take time to digest and scrutinize the stories I’m reading, which are full of subplots and meaningful emotions. I may even take notes.
Oh, the hummingbirds are so cute!
- Turn off spelling and grammar check.
- Don’t research while writing.

OMGosh! I set up a free three-day trial and clicked on Focus. I felt a strange tinge in my left ear. I tried different volumes, lower is better for me. Various distractions entered my mind. However, if I stayed in some type of writing software, and had writing on my brain, I had to write. Simply amazing.
As a side note, I hate the thought of wasting food. In my fridge is a box of rotten tasting, albeit, not rotten blueberries. Sigh. I must make jam, which calls for constant stirring = time away from writing.
A compromise? A solution? WordPerfect and Google Docs allow me to speak while the computer writes, (which I’ll try during my “jam session”).
I hope you felt as though this article transported your mind all over the place. Not to worry, I wrote it that way—full of distractions.
Don’t procrastinate. Pursue.
