If you are a writer who intends to make money writing novel-length fiction, then mark your calendar, get on the computer, and get booked for RMFW’s Annual Education Event.
The event is April 13th in Golden, Colorado. It starts at 8:00 a.m. and runs until 4:00 p.m. Registration includes the workshops AND breakfast AND lunch. The cut-off for early registration is March 15th, so don’t wait if you want to save some bucks. We are limited on the number of attendees and have sold out two of the last three years. This year, we are also offering 15-minute one-on-one appointments with agents and editors.
The morning workshop, Finding your Unique Writing Approach, features speakers Stuart Horwitz and Anita Mumm. Their presentation will focus on finding your unique approach, whether plotting or pantsing, separating your work into scenes to diagnose what’s wrong, why some narratives feel like they’re on the right track and others are lost in the woods, and more.
After lunch, we’ll break out into two tracks: self-publishing and traditional publishing.
The self-publishing panel will include four multi-self-published authors: Corinne O’Flynn, Lisa Manifold, Nathan Lowell, and Bernadette Marie. These guys really know their stuff, including editing, cover art and matter, timelines, budgets, resources, and much more.
The traditional publishing track will feature Angie Hodapp of the Nelson Literary Agency, who will help you understand what to expect when going the traditional route. This includes how to query and pitch, what happens if you (Lucky you!) get multiple offers of representation, what to look for in agency agreements, and what the editorial submission process looks like (including auctions, deals and contracts, cover, subrights, and sticky situations).
The last workshop will bring everyone back together for Marketing for Writers. This panel will feature Corinne, Lisa, Nathan, Bernadette, and Angie. It will cover marketing for self-published, traditional, and hybrid authors, including budgets, best practices, pitfalls, bad ideas, resources, and more.
One-on-one appointments will be available throughout the day with Stuart, Anita, Corinne, Lisa, Nathan, and Bernadette, as well as Susan Brooks and Patrick Munnelly, acquiring editors at Denver-based independent publishing house Literary Wanderlust. These appointments are limited and will be booked on a first-registered, first-scheduled basis. While space is available, you may register for up to three appointments during the day. One-on-ones with Susan or Patrick will be for pitches on material they are interested in (see their bios on the RMFW website for details). Stuart will critique your pitch or synopsis, and Anita will critique your first five pages or give advice on how to survive the slush pile. Bernadette, Corinne, Lisa, and Nathan will critique your query, synopsis, or first five pages. Or you can turn your one-on-one into a general discussion about the business of writing. If you are requesting critiques, you will be given instructions on how to submit them in advance of the event – no event-day submissions will be accepted.
Full details are on the special events page. Hope to see you there!
Thanks for the blog. I’m a new writer and interested in attending. However, I’m vision impaired. Will workshop materials be made available in an electronic format? Printed handouts are pretty much useless for me. Thanks in advance!
Hello, I registered and paid for this event. However, I did not sign up for a one-on-one meeting which I would like to do. I cannot get back into the registration. Can you help me?
